Cyclone Nisarga further weakens into deep depression

In less than two hours of its initial weakening, Cyclone Nisarga further weakened into a deep depression during its onward progress late on Wednesday evening.

As of 7.30pm, the deep depression was located at about 80km of North of Pune district and 100 km east of Mumbai and lay over north Madhya Maharashtra. This system has seen very rapid intensification and weakening on the same day within twelve hours of Wednesday.

In the morning, Nisarga had intensified and made a landfall as a Severe Cyclonic Storm. Soon after crossing Alibag, it weakened into the category of a cyclonic storm and after four hours post landfall, it weakened into a deep depression.

The landfall occurred between 12.30 – 3.30pm on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated. As of 3.30pm on Wednesday, it lay 70km southeast of Mumbai and 60 km west of Pune.

After advancing onto land, the wind speed at the centre of the storm has marginally reduced, and the highest it went was 95 km / hr.

Nearly two hours post the commencement of its landfall, the centre of Cyclone Nisarga had crossed Alibag around 1.30pm.

Wind speed in Mumbai and neighbourhood has picked up over the last one hour, with IMD’s Colaba observatory recording wind speeds touching 50 km/hr.
