Nisarga Cyclone Live: Flight operations at Mumbai airport resumes after hours-long suspension due to storm

Cyclone Nisarga Live Updates, Heavy Rain Alert, Mumbai Weather Today:  Cyclone Nisarga made landfall at Maharashtra coast near Alibaug at about 1 PM Wednesday bringing heavy rains and strong winds in Mumbai and other adjoining areas. Mumbai, which is already grappling with coronavirus pandemic reporting over 40,000 cases, was pounded by heavy rains and powerful winds in the afternoon. The windspeed could reach upto 110 kmph, the weather department said and also issued a warning that storm surge of upto 6.5 feet may occur inundating the low-lying coastal areas of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts.

The Navy and NDRF have deployed several teams to tackle the situation. NDRF has deployed as many as 43 teams along the coastal areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat that fall in the Cyclone Nisarga’s path. Over 40,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations in Maharashtra, news agency PTI reported. Cyclone Nisarga is the second severe cyclonic storm to hit the Indian coastline is less than a month after Cyclone Amphan ravaged West Bengal and Odisha. The cyclone, considered to be one of the most devastating to have originated from the Bay of Bengal in last few years, killed at least 100 people apart from destroying crops and damaging property across the two states.
