Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to CIIs 125th summit recalled his commitment to Farmers of India. He has specifically quoted that Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees Act (APMC Act), was a a hurdle to farmers and the current government has made huge changes in the same. He has also said that more than one lakh crore rs had been spent to purchase various agriculture commodities. He said this change will break the traditional chain of middlemen who used to take away farmer's genuine remunerative prices. Local cluster for processing and purchase of Agriculture and allied commodities was also the feature of his address to CII.
Earlier to this central government has announced yet another increase in MSPs of various crops. This was reflection of the union governments commitment to make reforms during union budget 2018-19.
The fixing of the MSPs at a level of at least 1.5 times of the All-India weighted average Cost of Production (CoP), has been aimed at reasonably fair remuneration for the farmers. The expected returns to farmers over their cost of production are estimated to be highest in case of Bajra 83 per cent followed by urad 64 per cent, tur 58 per cent and maize at 53 per cent. For rest of the crops, return to farmers over their cost of production is estimated to be at least 50 per cent.
The majority of such decisions fall under PM-AASHA announced by the government in 2018 will aid in providing remunerative return to farmers for their produce. Also the umbrella scheme consists of three sub-schemes that are Price Support Scheme (PSS), Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS) and Private Procurement and Stockist Scheme (PPSS) on a pilot basis.
