D-Day for the UNC
THE EDITOR: As the country gets closer to the general election, supporters of the UNC are getting extremely worried as to the chances of the party winning at the polls.
The main concern revolves around the bland and listless leadership offered by Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Members agonise about the authoritarianism.
In spite of rumours to the contrary, the party’s national executive is but a sham, simply agreeing with everything the leader says. The screening process for candidates is nothing more than a public relations exercise with candidate selection predetermined.
Persad-Bissessar has never accepted responsibility for the fracture of the People’s Partnership and the ultimate loss in 2015 and her continuing cries of being a victim of a cabal rings hollow. She simply failed as a leader.
The same egotistic campaign of 2015 sadly resurfaces in 2020. Her social media trolls are reduced to extolling the physical and caring nature of an aging leader. They fail to realise that she is no Priyanka Chopra and the circumstances which catapulted her into the office of prime minister have been destroyed by her.
Persad-Bissessar is now imprisoned by a group of young inexperienced teenyboppers. She continues to hide out at her residence. She sends out lengthy press releases which are not read by most people.
As if her qualities and that of her selected candidates are not a source of worry, Persad-Bissessar will have to deal with a rampant PNM, whose leader is quite astute in political strategy.
The PNM cleverly floats public opinion balloons to test the population and certain leaks have a degree of truth.
The latest leak on a sitting opposition MP is certain to cause Persad-Bissessar sleepless nights as she is fully aware of her very close relations with the subject. She too is aware that the arrows are pointed at her as the MP will be nothing more than collateral damage.
The day after nomination may prove to be fatal for Persad-Bissessar and the UNC.
