FALL RIVER -- The city recorded a large increase in COVID-19 fatalities in Tuesday, but the increase was largely due to retroactive data from an update in how the state reports coronavirus cases, not any new spike of contagion.

Fall River reported three new cases on Tuesday and 15 new fatalities, bringing the city's totals to 1,338 cases and 55 deaths.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Monday started reporting both confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases and deaths dating back to March 1. Up until Monday, the numbers included only confirmed cases.

"Please note that this jump is due to changes in CDC guidelines and reflect retroactive cases," state Rep. Carole Fiola, D-Fall River, reported on Facebook on Tuesday.

Case totals for Bristol County stand at 7,380; for Massachusetts, 101,163. There were 32 new cases in the county, and 358 new cases statewide.

Statewide, 50 new deaths were reported Tuesday, bringing that total to 7,085.

Only four hospitals across Massachusetts are now using surge capacity to treat COVID-19 patients, down from 7 on Monday.

As of Tuesday, there were 84 patients, suspected and confirmed, being treated at Charlton Hospital in Fall River, 16 of them in intensive care.
