MUMBAI: The state education department on Monday prescribed syllabus and textbooks to be followed for teaching Marathi in schools across Maharashtra from the upcoming academic year. The state’s legislature in February this year cleared the Marathi Language Act 2020 to make Marathi a compulsory subject for up to class X in all schools across boards.

For the upcoming academic year, Marathi would be compulsory for class I and VI. It will be extended to the other grades progressively till it becomes compulsory up to Class 10 by 2024-25. Compulsory teaching of Marathi will be a condition for a school to register or obtain an NOC from the government.

In a government resolution issued on Monday, the state education department said that the syllabus has been prescribed keeping in mind the difficulty level of the subject for students from various mediums. “Efforts should be made to inculcate the skills of listening, speech, reading, writing and communication in the students for up to students of class V. Special efforts should be made to inculcate various high level skills such as self-expression and application for the level of class VI to X, which will create interest in language,” said the GR. The schools affiliated to the CBSE, CISCE, IB and Cambridge will be prescribed textbooks by the state. Teachers will also be provided training to understand the curriculum. Assessment rules for the subject up to class VIII would remain with the school like for other subjects.

Under the act, the state has made provisions to give exemption for students coming from abroad. However, students coming from other states and seeking admission in the state board courses. will not be exempted unless taking admission in exceptional circumstances. Exemptions will be granted by a committee headed by the director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training. The SCERT has also been entrusted with the responsibility of developing an online system for providing these exemptions.
