Opel Will Build New DS Model In Germany From 2021, Is It The DS 4?

Opel will soon build a new DS premium compact model at its main plant in Rüsselsheim, Germany, bringing the total number of models built there to three.

From summer 2021, a new premium model from PSA brand DS will be made at the German plant. Therefore, from the end of next year when the next-generation Opel Astra enters production, the Rüsselsheim facility will build three models: the facelifted Opel Insignia, the all-new Opel Astra and the as-yet-unnamed DS vehicle.

According to a statement from PSA, the investments in the Rüsselsheim plant will allow it to become “a sustainable location for vehicle production, including electrified models – thanks to the localization of the Group’s EMP2 platform.”

This tells us that the new DS model will be based on the EMP2 architecture for compact and midsize vehicles which currently underpins many Peugeot and Citroën models, as well as the DS 7 Crossback SUV. EMP2 also supports plug-in hybrid powertrains. Though unconfirmed, the second-generation DS4 fits the bill as it’s known to be based on EMP2 and is the only major debut DS has in store for 2021.

“This strategic decision by Groupe PSA is a great sign of confidence in our main plant and our highly qualified employees. The investment will strengthen vehicle production at the Rüsselsheim location in the long term with an expanded product range,” said Groupe PSA board member and Opel boss Michael Lohscheller.

Developing the Rüsselsheim plant into a manufacturing facility for an expanded portfolio of electrified vehicles will result in the phasing out of the M1X manual transmission in 2021. The six-speed unit is currently installed in the Astra K which will be phased out at the end of 2021.
