Nisarga Cyclone Mumbai LIVE: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the low-pressure area formed over the Arabian Sea has intensified into a depression and it will further intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 36 hours. It said the cyclonic storm will cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts late in the evening on June 3, bringing in its wake heavy rains in parts of the two states and Goa.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah took stock of the preparedness for the impending cyclone at a review meeting in Delhi.
The Gujarat government has ordered the evacuation of people living in low-lying coastal areas and deployed teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in over half a dozen districts.Read More

With Cyclone Nisarga fast approaching the coastal areas of Maharashtra, the authorities in Raigad district are preparing to tackle the storm, which is estimated to make landfall on June 3, an official said on Tuesday.
"We have evacuated more than 3,500 people from koliwadas (fishermen colonies) and temporary houses to safer structures like schools, community halls and government buildings," superintendent of police Raigad, Anil Paraskar said. (PTI)

in south Gujarat, the government has started evacuating over 78,000 people from four districts located near the coastline and deployed 19 teams of NDRF and SDRF, officials have said.
While 13 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and six teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed at different locations, five more teams of the NDRF will arrive soon. "A total of 78,971 persons living near the seashore in Valsad, Surat, Navsari and Bharuch districts will be shifted to safer locations. 1,727 villagers have already been shifted," Gujarat Relief Commissioner Harshad Patel told reporters in Gandhinagar on Tuesday. Cyclone Nisarga: DoT holds meeting with telcos to assess arrangements
The telecom department has taken stock of the readiness and arrangements made by telecom companies for ensuring network connectivity in Maharashtra and Gujarat, in the backdrop of impending cyclone 'Nisarga', according to a statement.
"All our infrastructure provider (IP) members have taken necessary steps to ensure connectivity 24/7 in the areas which are likely to be affected by the cyclone and all the background arrangements like additional DG sets, battery banks, spare parts, stocking of diesel are taken care of," TR Dua, Director-General, Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA), said in a statement. while the windstorm is only some hours away from hitting the state's coast. The former minister also questioned when will Mumbai's disaster management plan be activated and asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra government to protect the state from the cyclonic storm.
However, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar trashed Shelar's charges, saying minute-to-minute information is being received by the BMC's disaster management cell and the civic body's personnel are on their toes. (PTI)
