Fifty more people have died of the coronavirus, bringing the number of fatalities to 755, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize confirmed on Tuesday.

This as the number of cases nationwide increased to 35 812, up by 1 461 from the day before.

"The recoveries to date are 18 313, [which] translates to a recovery rate of 51.1%," Mkhize said.

The Western Cape accounts for 65.9% of the infections, with 23 583 confirmed cases and 562 deaths.

On Tuesday, Premier Alan Winde said the most prevalent comorbidities in coronavirus deaths across all age groups were diabetes and hypertension.

"The majority of people who contract Covid-19 will experience mild symptoms and will be able to isolate and recover at home. However, those who are over the age of 55 or with underlying health conditions are most at risk of becoming seriously ill.

"This is why our health response must place a special focus on these groups, and why our testing strategy must align with this risk," he added.
