Social media giants Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube changed the colour of their display picture to black on their official handle on the microblogging site. This was done to express their solidarity with the black community after the recent killing of George Floyd. Video sharing service TikTok and OTT platforms Netflix and Prime Video have also registered their protest against racism by putting out official statements.
Twitter changed its display picture and description on the platform. The blue bird is now black, and the description reads, #BlackLivesMatter. Facebook, too, changed its profile picture to black on Twitter. The firm’s photo-sharing platform, Instagram, also went black. Instagram also announced that “@facebook is pledging $10 million to efforts committed to ending racial injustice”.
Google’s YouTube also changed it’s red logo to black on Twitter and wrote, “We stand in solidarity against racism and violence... We’re pledging $1M in support of efforts to address social injustice.” TikTok too issued a statement: “We... are proud to provide a platform where #BlackLivesMatter and #georgefloyd generate powerful and important content with over 1 billion views.”
