Restrictions continue to remain in force for gymsMYSURU: The impact of the pandemic on the economy has been staggering, with many businesses being forced to close. The hospitality and tourism sectors, perhaps, have borne the brunt, but gyms and fitness centres have been badly hit too. With lockdown norms yet to be lifted for gyms and with the fitness-conscious working out at home or taking to yoga, gym owners are folding up and selling out.
Gym owners say the central government may not allow them to open till the end of the month. The prospect of another month without revenue is too hard a hit so many are selling equipment. Social media and various websites are awash with offers on equipment. Mysuru city alone has over 100 fitness centres.
Pallavi Kakade, owner of Core Fitness in Ramakrishnana Nagar said she expects restrictions on gyms to continue till the end of the month. “We’ve been shut for over two months now and naturally owners and trainers are looking at various alternatives,” Kakade said. “It is not possible to run a fitness centre without any revenue for months together.”
She said the government should rescue the segment. “We have started a social media campaign seeking permission for gyms to open,” she said.
Tej, a personal fitness trainer, said, “The government must allow gyms to function. Even before the nationwide lockdown was announced, gyms were shut because of the pandemic. We are struggling to make a livelihood.”
Owners fear that even if restrictions are lifted, customers may not return for fear of an infection. Also, yoga and home workouts are now more popular.
Suraj KS, an engineering student and gym goer, said, “Secondhand gym equipment is now available for a throwaway price online. Fitness training is easy and safe at home. I have added yoga to my fitness activities.”
