299 new Covid cases take Karnataka tally past 3,000

BENGALURU: Karnataka on Sunday set another record with 299 Covid-19 cases in a single day, pushing the total number of cases to 3,221.
A majority of the cases were those who had returned from outside the state or the country. A staggering 85% -- or 253 -- were patients returning from Maharashtra. While there were two returnees each from Delhi and Malaysia, three had come back from Doha and one from Indonesia.
The health department on Sunday confirmed two persons, who died on May 29, succumbed to Covid-19, taking the state toll to 51. Of the new cases, 11 were contacts of existing patients and authorities were yet to trace the contacts of 19. One patient had influenza-like illness, and health workers in isolation wards are among the infected.
A 50-year-old man from Raichur, who had returned from Maharashtra on May 21 and was diagnosed with SARI, severe pneumonia, sepsis and respiratory failure, was hospitalised on May 28 and died the following day. In the second case, a 75-year-old man from Bidar was admitted on May 18 after he showed symptoms of fever and breathlessness, and died on May 29. Sunday also saw a record 221 discharges, more than double of 103 reported on Saturday.
