Tamil outfit member arrested in Trichy for burning CM’s effigy

TRICHY: The Thiruverumbur police in Trichy arrested a central committee member of the Tamil Desa Makkal Iyakkam on sedition charges after he burnt the effigy of chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday morning alleging that the Tamil Nadu government had failed to conduct more Covid-19 tests across the state.
The arrested Tamil outfit member has been identified as G Ragu, 29, of Thiruverumbur.
In a 7.47-minute Facebook live video, Ragu spoke about the demand of the outfit that the government carry out massive Covid-19 testing across the state to identify patients and treat them. He also alleged that the government had ignored their demand for lifting the lockdown, forcing him to burn the effigy of the chief minister.
Holding the effigy of EPS in one hand, he recorded his speech live outside Thiruverumbur bus stand around 7am. He set the effigy afire halfway through his speech.
The police detained him and slapped sedition charges on him. He would be produced before a court later.
