A group of creative housemates in Sydney have transformed a $150 second hand fridge into a chic 'chalkboard' appliance using black vinyl adhesive from Kmart.

Jessica, one of the housemates, shared before and after images of the home project to the Kmart Hacks and Décor Facebook group, where it has received more than 2,200 likes.

She said while the fridge was in good working condition, it had a few noticeable dents and scratches that needed to be hidden.

Jessica and her housemates used three rolls of the Kmart chalkboard vinyl, which is priced at $3 for a two metre roll.

'My housemate and I were lucky enough to find a fridge on Facebook Marketplace for just $150; it's a great fridge, but the only downside is that it had dents and scratches all over it,' Jessica said online.

'So we decided to give it a makeover, with some black vinyl adhesive. A pretty impressive upgrade for less than $10.'

The third image shared online showed the text 'did I mention it's a chalkboard' written on the upgraded fridge.

In the comments of the post, Jesse said the transformation requires two people, a ruler to smooth out any air bubbles and that the vinyl itself 'sticks really well'.

'Wow that's awesome mine is all scratched from kids - will have to give this a go,' one mum said.

'I shared this with my partner and he said I can do it! I'm excited,' another added.

While many were excited to pursue the creative idea themselves, others were concerned whether the vinyl would effect the functionality of the fridge and cause it to overheat.

'I saw some other posts about people putting it on electronics though and they were warned that it can make it overheat and warp the vinyl,' one woman said.

Although a couple of the larger stubborn dents were still visible after the vinyl was applied, they were less noticeable and the home project transformed the style of the entire fridge.
