Uttarakhand Tourism Minister tested positive for Coronavirus

On Sunday 31st May, 2020, a Cabinet Minister in Uttarakhand Government has tested positive for Coronavirus, reported news agency ANI. The State Chief Secretary, Utpal Kumar Singh said that at least 22 people comprising his family members and staff have tested positive.


According to a News 18 report, Satpal Maharaj– who holds the tourism portfolio– tested positive just a day prior his wife showed signs of the virus. All the staff of the minister has been quarantined.


On Saturday, his wife, Amrita Rawat had tested positive for COVID-19 after experiencing fever for the last few days. “Her report has come and she has tested positive for coronavirus. She is being admitted to hospital as per the state protocol,” District Magistrate Ashish Srivastava had told ANI.


Immediately, she was sent to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Rishikesh on Sunday and currently in isolation, hospital PRO, Harish Thapliyal, informed PTI. Satpal Maharaj minister was immediately placed under quarantine. 


The Dehradun administration, earlier this week has put his private residence under quarantine after some people from Delhi came to see him in the middle of lockdown.


However, the minister confirmed that at that moment the guests had put up in one portion of the house as he lived in the other section. 


The Maharaj on Friday took part in the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister, Trivendra Singh Rawat. In that meeting, several ministers and officials were present as well.


According to the Union Health Ministry, in Uttarakhand, minimum 749 people have tested positive for COVID-19 so far. In the meantime, 102 have got cured from the deadly attack of the virus, as five patients have succumbed to the infection.


In the middle of spurt in cases, till June 30th, the centre has extended lockdown in all containment zones. Many states like West Bengal, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, among others has extended the ongoing lockdown for 15-30 days. Restrictions have been eased in “Unlock 1”.
