Global COVID-19 cases reach over 6.1 million

The total number of global coronavirus cases has increased to over 6.1 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 3,71,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

As of Monday morning, the overall number of cases stood at 61,65,181, while the death toll increased to 3,71,995, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

With 1,789,364 confirmed cases and 1,04,358 deaths, the US accounts for the highest number of infections and fatalities in the world, according to the CSSE.

Meanwhile, in terms of cases, Brazil comes in second place with 514,849 infections.

This was followed by Russia (4,05,843), the UK (2,76,156), Spain (2,39,479), Italy (2,32,997), India (1,90,609), France (1,89,009), Germany (183,410), Peru (1,64,476), Turkey (163,942), and Iran (1,51,466), the CSSE figures showed.

Regarding fatalities, the UK continues in the second position after the US with 38,571 COVID-19 deaths, which also accounts for the highest fatalities in Europe. The other countries with over 10,000 deaths are Italy (33,415), Brazil (29,314), France (28,805) and Spain (27,127).

TOTAL CASES IN INDIA

The nationwide total of COVID-19 cases has crossed the mark of 1.9 lakh after a record of 8,392 people tested positive for the contagion in the last 24 hours. As per the Union Health Ministry, the total cases in the nation stood at 1,90,535 including 5,394 deaths. India has climbed to seventh from the ninth spot in the list of 10 nations worst hit by the pandemic, with more cases than that of France.

This is the second straight day that the cases are surging with rapid speed in the country. After the central government declared the fifth phase of the lockdown State governments also came out with varied 'Unlock 1' advisory including on allowing inter-state travel even as states such as Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra extended the lockdown till June 30 with several relaxations.
