Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson Nandadeep Raut has stated that the steps initiated to clear the legacy waste at Mormugao Solid Waste Treatment Plant (MSWTP) at Headland-Sada is one of the biggest achievement for the council during his tenure in the past one year.

Speaking to this daily, Raut disclosed that the five year tenure of the council will complete in another four months, and then starts preparation for the next council election to be scheduled in the month of October.

“I have made sincere efforts to put the administration on a right track and even made successful attempts to deliver clean, transparent and good administration to the people of Vasco, Mormugao and Dabolim constituency that comes under the jurisdiction of MMC, comprising of 25 wards”, said Raut. He disclosed that the decision to clear legacy waste which was lying in several dumps at MSWTP since its inception was not a easy one, but due to the initiative of the Urban Development Minister Milind Naik and cooperation rendered by the Minister of Waste Management Michael Lobo, it was possible, giving relief to the people residing near the waste.

He maintained that the political intervention could destabilise the council. “We can provide a stable council to the people if all the councillors are united with the support of the legislators. We can bring in several developmental works and projects, if the council is not politicised”, he said.

He said that out of Rs 30 crores from the 14th Finance Commission this year, around Rs 5.56 crores have been proposed for initiating various developmental works in all 25 wards. “Around Rs 5.50 crores will be spent on installation of bio-gas plant at MSWTP, while around Rs 3 crores will be awarded for the construction of a shed and compound wall”, told Raut.

The remaining funds from the 14th Finance Commission will be distributed equally in all the 25 wards in order to take up developmental works and projects.

“The utilisation of all the funds under the 14th Finance Commission could enable the council to avail grants from the 15th Finance Commission for the next year”, informed Raut.
