Convicts' escape: Four jail officials suspended in Punjab

SANGRUR: The state prisons department on Saturday ordered the suspension of an assistant jail superintendent and three head wardens of the Sangrur jail from where two convicts had escaped on Thursday.
The action has been taken against the four for being negligent on duty. The department has terminated the services of two employees of Punjab Ex-servicemen Corporation (Pesco), the agency involved in providing security to state jails.
The orders were issued after an inspection of the jail by IG (jails) R K Arora. The suspended staffers include assistant jail superintendent Hari Singh and head wardens Jarnail Singh, Paramjit Singh and Joginder Singh.
Arora said a departmental inquiry had already been initiated against the four. Gurdarshan Singh, a murder convict, and Sandeep Singh, a convict in an attempt to murder case, had given the jail staffers the slip when they had taken them to an open site within on jail premises for farming.
