On 2 June, the Supreme Court will hear a petition demanding the use of the words 'India' or 'Hindustan' in place of 'India', in which the Supreme Court has been requested to replace Bharat with India or Hindustan. To instruct the use of the word, it has also been requested to direct the Central Government to amend the Constitution.


This petition calls for the amendment of Article 1 of the Constitution, Article 1 deals with the name and territory of the Union. This Article refers to India as India / India.

According to a notice uploaded on the apex court website, the matter will be listed for hearing before a bench headed by the CJI on June 2, a person from Delhi has filed the petition. It asserts that such amendments would "relieve the citizens of this country from the colonial past."
