KDMC's zero garbage policy draws ire of residents

KALYAN: The residents from Kalyan-Dombivli, under stress due to rising Covid-19 cases in city are now unhappy with Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation's zero garbage policy launched this week.
Under the policy KDMC's garbage van has stopped accepting garbage from those who do not give dry and wet garbage seperately and have also removed bins from roadside. The KDMC have also said that those housing societies or person will not follow the order will face legal action.
The resident said they welcome KDMC's move which is in the intrest of people but raising question over timing of its implementation during lockdown.
Many complained that due to lockdown they were unable to get separate dustbins for wet and dry garbage resulting in KDMC's garbage van not accepting their garbage.
Ramesh Jadhav a resident from Mohindar Singh Kabul Singh School area said, "Due to lockdown we can't buy seperate dustbins in our society and we want KDMC to arrange bins for us or hold decision till lockdown ends."
It has also been found that KDMC in absence of adequate bins for dry and wet have also removed bins from roadside, resulting in people who used to dump garbage in to bins started throwing it on roadside causing inconvenience to public.
"Citizens are already under stress due to Covid-19. On top that you (KDMC) have announced zero garbage policy which has resulted in increasing the garbage on road as there are no bins" tweeted a resident.
An activist Anurag Pandey said, "We welcome KDMC's initiative but this is not the time for implementation because due to lockdown no one is able to buy separate dustbins and since KDMC has removed bins people have started throwing garbage on roadside which may create health issues."
Pandey said, "Presently KDMC should focus on Covid-19 epidemic as numbers of patients in city is rising and there are many complaint of shortage of ambulance and delay in getting treatment."
A senior KDMC official said, "There is no compulsion of keeping separate bins for dry garbage they can keep it in a gunny bag and it will be taken twice a week while residents only require to given wet garbage regularly for which they can use their available bin." Officials also clarified that KDMC commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi who recently took charge, took decision of implementing zero garbage policy despite lockdown because city in past several times has been criticised for not dealing garbage issue properly.
