Twitter on Friday said that one of US President Donald Trump's tweets on Minneapolis protests had breached its rules about "glorifying violence."

"...These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!" Trump's tweet read.

Twitter further said that it may be in the public's interest for the tweet to remain accessible, news agency Reuters reported.

Earlier on Tuesday, Twitter labelled tweets from Donald Trump as "potentially misleading" — a move that led to the president accusing the social media platform of election meddling.

Twitter marked two of Trump's tweets that falsely claimed mail-in ballots would lead to widespread voter fraud, appending a message the company has introduced to combat misinformation and disputed or unverified claims, CNN reported.

"Get the facts about mail-in ballots," read the message beneath each tweet. It linked to a curated fact-check page the platform had created filled with further links and summaries of news articles debunking the assertion.

Twitter said the decision was taken in order to offer "context" around Trump's comments. Responding to the move, Trump attacked Twitter and said he would bring about a legislation that may repeal or weaken a law that protects social media companies from liability for content posted by their users.
