Pune: Residents of PCMC annoyed due to water and power cuts

Residents in many areas of Pimpri Chinchwad are forced to reel under the double problems of power and water cuts as the average temperature rises. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) announced Thursday water closure and possible supply disruptions on Friday. This is only one addition to the drastic water cuts that have forced people to put up with over the past week.

Executive engineer Ramdas Tambe, PCMC, spoke to TOI “we are still trying to draw as much raw water as we did three years ago but the population in Pune-Pimpri Chinchwad area has increased over the past couple of months. We are still trying to cut down on non-revenue water supply but owing to the lockdown there is a shortage of labour and the work is expected to take six months.” This, even as the Pavana dam — the twin township's main source of water supply — was around 33 per cent complete as of May 27 versus 19 per cent as of the same date in 2019. He said the projects taking in more water from the dams of Bhama-Askhed and Andra were still a work in progress. The problem is not about the space to store the water it’s about disturbances related to supply. Since PCMC also conducted pre-monsoon operations, there are also electricity supply disruptions. An official at MSEDCL said the disruption on Wednesday was caused by road digging as some cables were snapped in Pimple Saudagar during the road laying operation.
