CHENNAI: A car and bike mechanic, Kesavan, popular among film stars, committed suicide by jumping into the sea off Marina on Tuesday night. Police, quoting witnesses, said the 60-year-old had walked all the way from his house in Saligramam to Anna Square. He took the extreme step due to poverty, his family members told police.
A few fishermen spotted Kesavan’s body and alerted the police control room. A police team led by the sub-inspector of police Sankar Raj attached to the Anna Square police station reached the spot and sent the body to the Omandurar Government Hospital for postmortem.
They found an ID on his person and contacted his family. During questioning, his family members informed police that Kesavan had left the house on Tuesday morning. He told them that he was going to collect three bikes from a mechanic at Pudupet, which would help him earn at least 2,000.
Inquiries indicated that Kesavan did not get any jobs during the lockdown and could not manage the day-to-day expenses of his family. He had to do away with the three employees of his workshop since the lockdown began. The financial strain had left Kesavan and his family shattered, police said.
Despite earning the good will of a few senior actors of Kollywood, Kesavan was hesitant to seek their help to tide over the lockdown, his kin told police.
“I last met Kesavan a few months ago. I got in touch with him through a mutual friend and have known him for almost a decade now. He helped many who sought his aid,” his friend B Sethuraman told TOI.
The Anna Square police personnel have registered a case and further investigations are on.
