Representative image. SANGRUR: Taken out for farming at the open site within the Sangrur Jail, two convicts managed to escape from custody on Thursday afternoon, sending the jail authorities in a tizzy.
Murder convict Gurdarshan Singh Darshan, a resident of Mubarakpur Chujhan (Sandaur) who was undergoing life term for murder and Sandeep Singh, a resident of Banga (Moonak), who was undergoing jail term for an attempt to murder (section 307 of the IPC) managed to find a way out of the jail premises at around 3:30 pm while they along with some other inmates were taken to the open site inside the Sangrur jail for farming activities.
Taken aback by the escape of the two convicts, the jail authorities immediately started a search operation around the jail but could not find the two convicts. Finally, the jail authorities decided to inform the district police and a formal complaint was filed with them at around 5:30 pm.
According to the sources they had been released from their barracks in the morning and taken to the open site right adjacent to the jail. In the afternoon, the two gave the security personal a slip. Later, SSP Sangrur Sandeep Garg along with senior police officials of the district reached the spot.
DSP Satpal Sharma said after they received information about the incident, special teams were constituted which immediately started conducted raids.
The police are maintaining that it was yet to be established as to how the two managed to escape from within the jail premises The investigations into their escape have already been launched.
