A man who had a crossbow in his flat during a seven hour stand-off with police has been locked up in jail.

Lee Michael Jones shouted abuse and threats at police and at one stage threatened to blow up the house during the siege at Windsor Street, Rhyl last February.

Armed officers, a police dog and specially trained negotiators were drafted in during the incident a judge at Mold Crown Court heard.

When the flat was searched various weapons were found including a hand-held crossbow and a hammer.

Jones, 32, admitted a charge of affray and was jailed for 14 months.

Judge Niclas Parry said the behaviour of Jones that day was "bizarre" but fortunately no one was injured in the incident.

"What happened was effectively a siege and significant resources were deployed due to the threats made," he said.

Defence counsel Simon Killeen said he realised custody was inevitable but asked the judge to give credit for his guilty plea and bear in mind the current difficulties in prison due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Jones, he added, said the crossbow was for self-defence but had never been loaded during the incident.

Maria Masselis, prosecuting, said the incident began at about 3.40pm when Jones was heard shouting from a window by a mum walking along the street.

Moments later she realised Jones was behind her and her young daughter. He was pointing at her and staring.

"She feared for her safety and at one point hid behind a van but the defendant continued staring," the barrister said.

The woman, who had not known Jones previously, went to a hairdressing salon nearby where staff locked the doors and alerted police.

"The defendant shouted 'I'll get you' before walking off," she added.

Police went to the flat but Jones shouted abuse at the officers and started throwing items out of the window.

Armed police officers were brought in after Jones threatened to shoot the officers and blow up the property.

He gave himself up hours later.
