1 dead, 2.71 lakh affected, 16,720 displaced in Assam flood

GUWAHATI: Assam’s flood situation further worsened on Wednesday resulting into the death of a person in Goalpara district even as the affected population surged to 2.71 lakh in 11 districts out of which the number of people displaced from their homes to relief camps rose to 16,720.
In an advisory the CWC stated that due to “heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall” in southern parts of Brahmaputra basin forecast for next 24 hours, Brahmaputra river is likely to cross danger level and flow in “severe flood situation at Tezpur in Sonitpur district.”
Due to the incessant rain for last few days, landslides in Dima Hasao district in the day has affected a population of 72 I three villages in the district. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 18 houses have been completely destroyed and another 11 houses partially.
Goalpara remains as the worst-hit district where 2.15 lakh are affected followed by over 22000 in Nalbari and over 10,000 in Nagaon districts. Also majority of the population, 16,037, taking shelter in the relief camps are from Goalpara district.
The disaster management body stated that the flood waters have breached several embankments, washed away many bridges and submerged a large number roads in the affected districts.
CWC advisories for Assam, Tripura
The Central Water Commission has issued an alert for Jorhat, Sonitpur, Karbi Anglang, Nagaon, Morigaon, Baksa, Kamrup (Metro), Goalpara, Dhubri, Cachar, Hailakhandi and Karimgunj districts.
The advisory adds, “Due to the combined effect of Brahmaputra and Kopili, river Brahmaputra is likely to rise at Guwahati DC Court in Kamrup Urban District and flow in Severe Flood Situation from tomorrow 28th May 2020 afternoon onwards.”
“Due to forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Barak and Meghna basins, river Barak, Katakhal, Kushiyara are likely to rise rapidly and may flow in Above Normal to Severe Flood Situation in the Districts of Cachar, Hailakhand and Karimganj Districts between 28" and 30" May 2020,” the advisory adds.
For Tripura, the CWC advisory states, “Due to forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Manu, Haora, Khowai, Gumti river basins are likely to rise rapidly and may flow in Above Normal to Severe Flood Situation in the Districts of North, South Tripura, Dhalai and Unakoti Districts between 28" and 30" May 2020.” And has issued an alert for North, South, Dhalai and Unakoti districts of the state.
