BMW X2 xDrive25e Debuts With PHEV Powertrain Offering 35 Miles Of Electric-Only Range

BMW’s plug-in hybrid lineup is expanding as the company has introduced the new X2 xDrive25e which was previewed earlier this year.

Set to be launched in Germany this summer, the eco-friendly crossover features a unique front fascia which eschews the round fog lights found on the standard model. They’re effectively replaced by new LED headlights which have a “bad weather light” function.

Additional changes are limited, but the plug-in hybrid has improved aerodynamics thanks to a 0.4 inch (10 mm) lower ride height. The model also sports a pedestrian warning system and 17-inch lightweight alloy wheels.

Interior changes are modest, but include an assortment of hybrid-specific displays. The 10 kWh lithium-ion battery pack also results in “slightly less” cargo space as the model can only haul up to 45.6 cubic feet (1,290 liters) of luggage when the rear seats are folded down.

Of course, the big news is the crossover’s plug-in hybrid powertrain which consists of a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 123 hp (92 kW / 125 PS) and powers the front wheels. It’s joined by a 94 hp (70 kW / 95 PS) electric motor that powers the rear wheels.

This setup gives the X2 all-wheel drive and a combined output of 217 hp (162 kW / 220 PS) and 284 lb-ft (385 Nm) of torque. In terms of performance, the model can accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 6.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 121 mph (195 km/h).

More importantly, the model has an electric-only range of up to 35 miles (57 km). When the battery is depleted, it can be fully recharged approximately five hours using a household outlet. However, a BMW i Wallbox charger drops that time to around 3.2 hours.
