A vibrant sangeet with performances by the bride and groom, a discreet Anand Karaj and Pinterest-worthy bridal couture, Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput Kapoor’s wedding is one for the books
What do Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh have in common? Aside from being some of the most sought-after, successful actors in Bollywood, they all pulled off hush-hush weddings without media glare and zero fanfare. As stars know well, it's hard to keep a secret in Bollywood with paparazzi and always-speculative press. And yet, somehow, they managed to tie the knot with personalised nuptials that would be pinned on inspiration mood boards for years to come. We'd go out on a limb to say that the Kabir Singh star was among the firsts to set this precedent when he got married to Mira Rajput Kapoor in a low-key celebration back in July 2015. Ever since, the couple has been giving us serious #MarriageGoals, and even added to their family with two adorable kids, Misha and Zain.
Here, we look back at how it all started and the pair’s fun-filled under-the-radar pre-wedding festivities, pheras and Anand Karaj ceremony.
Kapoor's meet-cute with now-wife, Mira, is one that many Indians can resonate with. The pair was set-up for an arranged marriage in 2014 by their families. “The only thought going through my mind was, ‘Here we are, sitting in this room on these two big sofas with nobody else around. Are we even going to last 15 minutes?’” the actor told Vogue in an interview. But the first time they met, they spoke for seven hours. “I’ve never been into movies, which I think was a good thing because following that first chat, when we actually got to know each other, it was for who we are…not for who others think we are,” Mira explained, elaborating how she instantly connected with him.
The couple hosted two nuptials at the bride’s Delhi home followed by two receptions, one in the capital and subsequently another one in Mumbai for friends for the film fraternity. The festivities kicked off with an intimate haldi celebration. The 25-year-old recently posted a never-seen-before picture from this occasion, where she can be seen in a fuss-free yellow kurta and palazzo pants. The event also saw a playful kalire ceremony.

Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput Kapoor’s pre-wedding festivities also included a vibrant mehandi cum sangeet party. The celebrations continued on the dance floor with the groom and other guests joining in. The couple also performed on the track ‘Saj Dhaj Ke Tashan Mein Rehna’ from Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja-starrer Mausam along with ‘Sari Ke Fall Sa’, as the wedding party cheered on. Also in attendance was Shahid’s father Pankaj Kapur, mother Neelima Azim and step-mother Supriya Pathak.
The evening replete with dancing demanded a fuss-free number. Mira Rajput Kapoor leaned on her favourite couturiers, Anita Dongre, for her bridal ensemble. Speaking of its details the designer revealed, “Mira opted for a customised beautiful yellow lehenga and paired it with a lovely peach choli. The outfit she chose perfectly complemented her young and colourful personality. I always believe in creating ensembles for a bride that are lightweight and versatile so she can dance and rejoice at her own wedding. And here she is, dancing the night away at her mehandi.” The lehenga was decorated with the couturier’s signature gota patti work. She topped off her look with statement jewels encrusted with gemstones and pearls. The groom complemented her in a red kurta layered with a Nehru jacket.
The couple had originally planned a destination wedding at a far-flung-foreign locale, but the venue was changed to Delhi eventually. Held on July 7, 2015, the pheras went on until dawn. Sparking several bridal trends, Mira Rajput Kapoor gave traditional reds a rain check in favour of a blush pink lehenga by Anamika Khanna (Shahid suggested the designer). “My wedding outfit arrived five days before the wedding,” the bride disclosed about how she was compelled to lock down the attire just days before the big day as the location was reshuffled.
“Mira’s wedding lehenga was a collaboration of ideas between her and me. She was very clear that she wanted something gentle and more pastel—nothing that would devour her. At the same time, Mira has a subtle classic taste. Following that guideline, we developed the pink pastel lehenga,” the couturier told us about how the outfit came to be in 48 days by 67 artisans. Just like her unconventional lehenga choice, Mira Rajput Kapoor gave predictable diamond and polki bridal sets a rain check and instead, picked navratna jewellery. The groom chose a white sherwani by Kunal Rawal. But all the manic lists, last-minute changes and near-tear moments were all worth it when the couple circled the sacred fire.
Among the many intimate festivities was the couple’s Gurudwara wedding. Also known as the Anand Karaj, the ceremony involved rituals in keeping with the Sikh culture. For the occasion, Mira Rajput Kapoor wore an elegant peachy-pink straight fit kurta and heavily-embroidered dupatta—both decorated with gold gota patti work. She layered it with churidar pants that came in a completely different hue that matched the intricate details on her dupatta. Shahid Kapoor relied on another white kurta for the intimate nuptials. “The Anand Karaj ceremony was my favourite moment from the wedding. It was just a room full of our people, celebrating us, perfect strangers who were going to take this insane journey together…” reminisces Shahid Kapoor.
