Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said India is facing a serious unemployment problem due to the coronavirus crisis and that many smaller businesses may go bankrupt if they don’t get immediate help.

Gandhi, who has been vocal about direct support from small-scale companies and migrant workers, claimed during a video conference that the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative has not delivered employment to many workers who have lost their jobs due to the prolonged lockdown.

The senior Congress leader stressed further on helping Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which require direct injection of capital. He said they will suffer fatal consequences if the government does not announce direct support for MSMEs.

“Injection of capital is required for MSMEs and poor, otherwise it will be fatal,” Gandhi said.

“They were already struggling. Many businesses are going to get bankrupt,” he added.

Gandhi also spoke about the prolonged lockdown in India and the recent spike in cases. Citing the rapid rise in cases, Gandhi said that India is facing the “result of a failed lockdown”.

“The lockdown in India has failed. What PM Modi expected from the lockdown, results have not been like that,” Gandhi said.

“India is the only country where the virus is exponentially rising and we are removing the lockdown,” he added after the government allowed several services to resume including flights.

He also asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on what the government’s strategy is to deal with the crisis.

“Now that the lockdown has failed, we need to know the government’s strategy on the next step. The Centre must divulge its Plan B,” Gandhi said.
