The massive tectonic plate beneath the Indian Ocean is breaking. According to research, this plate will be automatically divided into two parts in the future. However, it will still take thousands of years for its effects on humans. This plate is known as the Indo-Australian-Capricorn tectonic plate.
Research has shown that the rate of breakage of this plate is very slow and is spreading at a speed of 0.06 inch (1.7 millimeters) in a year. Researcher Orelli Courier's research has appeared in Live Science. The report states that this plate is separating so slowly that it is not initially known that the tectonic plate is separating.
However, after two strong earthquakes occurring at one place in the Indian Ocean, researchers realized that there was some movement underwater. The earthquake struck on April 11, 2012 near Indonesia in the Indian Ocean, measuring 8.6 and 8.2.
The earthquakes were not around the tectonic plate, but came from a different place which is somewhere in the middle of this plate. Orly said it's like a puzzle. There are three plants that are joined together and moving in the same direction. This break in the plate is not caused by an earthquake at sea, but because of other reasons.
