After Ola, Uber India lays off 600 employees

BENGALURU: Uber India has laid off about 600 employees, firing a significant part of the workforce of its mobility business in the country as a part of its global restructuring. The development comes after rival Ola also laid off a third of its workforce last week, letting go of 1400 employees as revenues fell by 94%.
“The impact of Covid-19 and the unpredictable nature of the recovery has left Uber IndiaSA with no choice but to reduce the size of its workforce. Around 600 full-time positions across driver and rider support, as well as other functions, are being impacted…..We made the decision now so we can look to the future with confidence,” said Pradeep Parameswaran, CEO Uber India, and South Asia, in a statement.
Uber will give each employee a minimum of 10 weeks' payout, medical insurance coverage for the next six months, outplacement support, retain their laptops, and given the option to join the Uber talent directory.
Uber has laid off 25% of its global workforce, or about 6,700 people since the pandemic started which has put a severe dent in its ride-hailing business. While cab-hailing services were shut for about two months in India, last week they have been allowed to start. Uber India has also tied up with online retailers like Bigbasket and Flipkart to do deliveries.
