Who will inherit Jayalalithaa's properties? Madras high court to decide on Wednesday

Jayalalithaa
CHENNAI: The Madras high court will decide on Wednesday who will inherit the properties of late Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa. The decision will come hardly a week after the state government promulgated an ordinance to temporarily take possession of Veda Nilayam – Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden in Chennai.
A division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice Abdul Quddhose will pass orders on the pleas moved by Jayalalithaa’s niece J Deepa, nephew J Deepak and a AIADMK cadre K Pugalenthi seeking to appoint them as administrators of the properties of the late chief minister.
In last August, the bench, while reserving the orders, made an oral observation as to why not a portion of Jayalalithaa’s properties should not be allotted for welfare of the public, as she was the leader who always said that she was made by the people and worked for the people. Deepa and Deepak submitted that they had no objection in doing so, as the same was the wish of their aunt.
“But as the only legal heirs of Jayalalithaa, we are entitled for all her properties. We have plans to establish a trust in her name and do charity to the people through it,” they added.
On May 22, the state government promulgated an ordinance to temporarily take possession Veda Nilayam. It said the ordinance was also meant to establish Puratchi Thalaivi Dr J Jayalalithaa Memorial Foundation for making long- term arrangements to convert Veda Nilayam into a memorial.
