West Bengal: Trinamool MLA injured as agitators demanding power hurl bricks

KOLKATA: Trinamool MLA of Metiabruz, Abdul Khalek Mollah was attacked at Nadial area with bricks and he sustained a major injury on Tuesday afternoon and was admitted to CMRI - a private hospital in Ekbalpore. The incident happened in Mollah's own constituency.
The MLA had gone to the spot to pacify a crowd who had blocked road in protest against the non-availability of power in the locality for the past six days. The area at Kanchantala was tensed as the mob refused to buzz and they demanded immediate power resumption as power supply in Kolkata was badly affected after the cyclone hit Kolkata last Wednesday and CESC had not been able to resume power supply in several places for which the city witnessed wide-scale protests. In several places, the people took to the streets to protest against poor service of CESC and even left organizations staged a demonstration in front of CESC head office.
When the MLA reached the spot and tried to pursue the agitators to withdraw the roadblock there was an altercation and police had tried to disperse the mob by lathi-charge and at that time bricks were hurled at the police and it hit the MLA, sources said. Later the MLA was found bleeding profusely and his ear was badly damaged witnesses said.
He was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment and was said to be stable. The police had to lob tear gas shells to control the crowd. Senior police officers including DC (Port) reached the spot to control the situation.
