AFL star Jack Steven has arrived back at training after being stabbed in the chest.

The Geelong Cats player took himself to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne at 1am on May 17 with a stab wound to the right side of his chest.

Steven, 30, had surgery to repair the damage before he was discharged last Tuesday.

But the midfielder said he was 'feeling healthy' as he arrived for training in Geelong, south-west of Melbourne, on Monday morning.

'It's good to be back. I can't wait to get back into it,' he told 7 News.

'[I'm feeling] nice and healthy.'

Police told Daily Mail Australia the circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated.

The player and his ex-partner Indiana Beresford were interviewed by detectives on Friday, the Herald Sun reported.

Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting Ms Beresford was involved in the stabbing.

It is not known why it took Steven five days to speak to police about the incident, but a source said the father-of-one was 'stressed out to the max' by the matter and 'has had a lot of things on his mind.'

In the hours before he was stabbed, Steven dropped his young daughter Maggie at the Brighton East home he shared with Ms Beresford before they separated a year ago.

The former St Kilda player was reportedly accompanied by a woman, who is believed to be his new flame Marley Gordon.

He later arrived at the Alfred Hospital with stab wounds before hospital staff raised the matter with police.

The Geelong Cats pledged their support to Steven last Sunday.

'The club is aware that Jack Steven was injured in an incident last night,' a statement read.

'Jack is in hospital and recovering. The club's concern is for Jack's health and well being.

'The matter has been referred to police and until their investigations are completed the club will not be in position to offer further comment.'

Former Cats captain Cameron Ling told ABC radio he was shattered to hear of the incident.

'He has battled mental health issues and worked through those and loved being at the beach and close to the coastal lifestyle,' Ling said.

'All reports from the club were he was training hard through the summer until the season stopped because of coronavirus.'

Ling said Steven was looking ahead to the future and 'excited about what the season held for him'.

'We don't know many details other than that footy is the furthest thing from his mind and his family's mind. All it is will be his health and wellbeing and recovering from this.'

'At his best he is a wonderful footballer and he came to the Cats looking for a change of scenery to reinvigorate his love of the game.'

Full contact training was allowed to resume from Monday as coronavirus restrictions are eased in Victoria.

Steven moved to the Cats from St Kilda for the 2020 season to be closer to his family after suffering from mental health issues in 2019.

The four-time St Kilda best-and-fairest award winner managed just seven matches last year in his fight with depression and revealed he thought of retiring from the game at his lowest point.

'I love playing, I still wanted to play,' he told AFL.com.au. 'I don't think my footy dies down that quickly, it's just my fitness and getting to happy, healthy state.

'It (having a break) had to happen. Everyone reacts differently to mental health. Some people can deal with it better than others and I just needed to take a break. It was the right thing to do.'

Steven thanked the Saints for their work with him throughout his career and was excited for the new chapter ahead.
