A female prison officer has been charged after allegedly having a sexual romance with an inmate while he was behind bars.

Melissa Goodwin, 25, was arrested on Monday morning over an alleged romance with a current prisoner that began last November.

Police allege that on five occasions she had sexual encounters with an inmate at Sydney's Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre.

Goodwin - who was stood down from her role last month - also allegedly smuggled in tobacco, cigarette lighters and chewing gum to the prisoner.

She was taken to Campbelltown Police Station on Monday and charged with public office misconduct and engaging in a relationship with an inmate, causing a safety risk.

Earlier this year Ms Goodwin posed happily alongside two fellow prison officers on the front cover of the March-April edition of the Corrective Services NSW magazine.

Robert Hallows, boss of the NSW Corrective Services Investigation Unit, said they  uncovered the alleged crime after a tip off from NSW Corrective Services.

'Last Wednesday we received some information from the Correction Services NSW intelligence unit in relation to an inappropriate relationship between a female officer and a male inmate,' Detective Inspector Hollows said.

'We do know and I can confirm it had been going on for several months, since last November.

'We have confirmed that their has been correspondence between this female officer and the inmate, and as a result she was taken to Campbelltown Police Station today and charged.

'The allegation is that there were five separate sexual incidents... also there was an allegation of contraband being taken into the centre, being tobacco, lighters and chewing gum.'

Detective Inspector Hollows said NSW Police have a 'zero tolerance' on relationships between inmates and corrective services employees.

She is understood to have recently been dating up and coming rapper Caleb Valeri, who himself has previously spent time behind bars.

Valeri - who goes by the rap name Hoodrich Hefs - has regularly posted photographs to Instagram of himself behind bars.

He has also shared photos of himself with Ms Goodwin, but it is not suggested these images are evidence of a relationship prior to his release from jail.
