Covid-19: Gujarat adds 394 cases, 29 deaths in 24 hours; Tally at 14,063, toll at 858

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat recorded 394 Covid-19 positive cases in 24 hours ending 5 pm on Sunday, taking the total to 14,063. The new cases include 279 from Ahmedabad, 35 from Surat, 30 from Vadodara and 11 from Gandhinagar. The state crossed the figure of 14,000 positive cases, becoming third after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to do so.
Likewise, the state recorded the death of 29 Covid-19 positive patients in 24 hours, taking the death toll to 858. Deaths include 28 from Ahmedabad and one from Surat, said state health department officials. Gujarat is second in death toll after Maharashtra with a death rate of 6.1%.
“A total of 243 patients got discharged in 24 hours, taking the total to 6,412. The discharged patients include 187 from Ahmedabad, 19 from Surat and 18 from Gir Somnath. With the new cases, the state's discharge rate has increased to 45.6%,” said an official.
Gujarat conducted 4,801 tests to find new Covid-19 positive cases. The state has so far carried out 1.82 lakh tests, mentioned by the health department bulletin.
Analysis of the cases and deaths in May reveal that the state recorded 644 deaths out of 9668 cases, giving a death rate of 6.7%. The state recorded 403 average daily cases and 27 average daily deaths in May so far.
State health department figures reveal that out of total deaths in May, 63.4% (408) had co-morbidity whereas in 36.6% (236) cases, Covid-19 infection was termed as the primary cause of death. While the state health department has stopped including the age and co-morbidity of the deceased in their daily bulletin, sources in Ahmedabad hospitals pointed at hypertension and diabetes as the most prominent co-morbidities among Covid-19 deceased.
Likewise, out of 644 deceased, 67% (431) were men and 33% (213) women. City-based experts pointed out that the age group of deceased is varied but relatively patients above 50 years have recorded slightly higher mortality. Ahmedabad has recorded 548 or 85% of total deaths of Gujarat in the month of May so far.
