THANE: With 134 new cases on Saturday, the Thane tally rose to 1,891. Housing minister Jitendra Awhad and Thane civic chief Vijay Singhal plan to set up a 1,000-bed temporary hospital in the Kalwa-Mumbra belt. A civic official said 65 people had died of Covid in Thane.
Awhad and Singhal held a meeting on Saturday to discuss the hospital. “We have shortlisted 2-3 places for it. The 1,000 beds will be divided between Kalwa and Mumbra, depending on availability of space. It will be finalised in a day or two,” Awhad told TOI.
Leader of opposition in the Thane civic body, Pramila Keni, demanded the number of ambulances in the city be increased. Keni said they’d been getting complaints that no ambulances were available to take patients to the hospital, that no one would respond to their calls. Presently, 19 civic and 150 private ambulances, and 5 TMC buses converted into ambulances, operate in the city.
