GUWAHATI: The first wave of floods, which hit Assam amid the Covid-19 pandemic on Friday, has affected nearly 3,000 people in Lakhimpur and Barpeta districts.
While more than 1300 were hit in Lakhimpur district on Saturday, over 600 remain affected in Barpeta since Friday.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority, in its bulletin, stated that apart from the Jia Bharali river in Sonitpur district, the Puthimari in Kamrup district is also flowing above the 'danger level.' According to the bulletin, one revenue circle each have been affected in Lakhimpur and Barpeta districts.
In terms of damage to crops, 105 hectares of crop area have been affected Lakhimpur district. Apart from crops, floodwaters have also damaged embankments in Nagaon, a road under Subansiri RC Bridge, washed away two bamboo bridges at Amtola and Kharkati in Lakhimpur dristrict. Moreover, erosion has been observed on the right bank of theBrahmaputra at Kalibari Rajah Sahar under Mahabhairab Mouza in Sonitpur district.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday visited Jonai in Dhemaji district and took stock of the Covid-19 preparedness. He also instructed the district administration to take preparatory measures for the forthcoming floods and asked them to be ready for facing all challenges in the fight against Covid-19 during the time of floods.
