Expect a lot of saris and lehengas by Sabyasachi, Anamika Khanna and Manish Malhotra
Katrina Kaif is the kind of woman who always looks put-together, even when she’s (probably) not trying. It’s got to be a gift that she has been bestowed with. Or perhaps it’s a skill she has honed over the years. The actress-cum-beauty-entrepreneur launched a make-up brand, Kay by Katrina, last year that advocated being your truest self. So, it shouldn’t be presumptuous to assume that the very sentiment is most likely at the heart of Kaif’s sartorial disposition too. In which case, Kaif’s most authentic self when it comes to Indian wear is that of a purveyor of clean classics. You’ll rarely find her trying to the toe the line between contemporary and traditional. She’d rather pick a side and commit to that aesthetic.
One look at her repertoire and a pattern quickly emerges: saris and lehengas (with the occasional anarkali) by well-established labels, preferably in floral prints. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Tarun Tahiliani, Anita Dongre, Manish Malhotra, Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla and Anamika Khanna are designers who repeatedly make the cut for Kaif.
Where saris are concerned, the actress is partial to monotone pastels and delicate blooms. Such as her cherry blossom pink floral Sabyasachi sari with a matching full-sleeved blouse and belt. And another painted with a garden of daisies, featuring a black sequinned border and sleeveless blouse, also by the Kolkata-based designer. For a touch of drama, Kaif turns to light-as-air Swarovski-encrusted Tahiliani drapes in frame-accentuating silhouettes. For an unexpected twist, it’s a siren red sharara sari by Malhotra worn with Victorian jewellery, and for drama, Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla numbers with dramatic capes.
For lehengas, the actress has a winning formula down pat: a generously voluminous lehenga with a classic blouse. Complementing jewellery and a no-fuss approach ensure the look is just right every time. Kaif really does love herself a Sabyasachi lehenga. Especially in feminine prints. Such as the white and pastel print summer-ready set she most recently wore. And then there was the more traditional red and gold lehenga for Diwali last year, and a black Sabyasachi floral lehenga with a solid-coloured blouse and statement choker for the screening of her film Bharat. She keeps switching it up in her tried-and-tested territory: so a pink gota work lehenga by Dongre on one day, and a red and nude modern set by Malhotra or a piece from Khanna’s ‘Everything is AK-OK’ line on another.
