3 clinical trials for virus cure begin at Naidu

Serum Institute is testing its vaccine on variety of patients; hospital also piloting an ayurvedic formula

N Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital was the first facility marked in Pune to impart care to coronavirus positive patients. Apart from treatments, efforts have moved in the direction of a cure through multiple clinical trials — one of which have now shown a glinting promise. A vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India is now being tested at Naidu hospital along with an ayurvedic formula. From Friday onwards, a life-saving drug will also be tested.

Recently, Serum Institute had partnered with researchers from Oxford University for the vaccines. The tests had begun last month at Oxford.

By partnering with Oxford manufacturers, Serum Institute is set to start manufacturing it here and, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is likely to play a major role in the process. The clinical trials have begun at Naidu already — a facility that is at present housing maximum patients. The hospital has also managed to treat and discharge the most number of patients.


The trials have been ongoing since last 10 days and are being conducted on various categories of patients to verify the effects for the research. They have been divided into three categories — coronavirus suspects, positive symptomatic and positive asymptomatic — and are being carried out in a controlled environment by PMC officials. The array of patients will help the gauge the results.

An ayurvedic formula is also being tested since the last few days. Along with it, a formulation test for a life-saving drug will start from Friday. Given the death rate of in the city, the PMC authorities are hopeful that these medication and research will help in bringing the situation under control.


PMC commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad said, “A lot of statistical data needs to be gathered before the medicine goes for final approvals. Accordingly, the trials for Serum vaccine have begun in which its effects on various kinds of patients are being observed in acontrolled environment. We are also testing the ayurvedic formula on patients. Along with this, we are also giving approval for the testing of a lifesaving drug. Naidu hospital is definitely going to lead the way.”
