Contact tracing

He is asked how many people have been recruited to be contact tracers.

Mr Drakeford said they are recruiting through local authorities mainly, with staff unable to do normal jobs.

He said they expect to need 1,000 people in early stages.

Trial will look at scripts and training.

Vaccine trial

On the vaccine trial, he said efforts are being made at “incredible speed” and said trials are there to find out whether what is devised in labs delivers in real life.

He said in any trial, there will be lots to learn.

Oxford study is “one of the leading studies across the world” he said, and added they were pleased to be part of it in Wales.

Care homes

Mr Drakeford is asked about a BBC report of the “harrowing experiences” in several care homes.

He is asked how he feels about possible human rights breaches, and whether the government takes responsibility.

He said he feels more determined than ever to make sure things put into place to protect people from coronavirus.

He said where there are blockages to policies, they will carefully look at how to deal with them.

He is asked whether we will see some easing of lockdown next week.

He said all governments are being cautious, but said he will take decisions that are right for Wales.

He said a number of things Scottish Government announced have been in place for last two weeks.

He said they will bring forward proposals a week from today, but said those measures will continue to be careful and cautious.

Journey “may be long” but it is one which together we act carefully and safely, there is a future for all, he said.

Bank holiday

These stay at home rules are particularly important ahead of Bank Holiday weekend.

Tougher fines now in place for people who repeatedly breach rules.

All evidence shows that efforts everyone have made are having a “real impact” on spread of virus, he said.

The regulations will be reviewed at the end of next week.

Press conference underway

The press conference is getting underway and the First Minister is addressing the briefing.

He said he wanted to look ahead at new developments which might help change the course of the coronavirus response.

He said Wales will play a significant role in vaccine search, with 500 people from NHS and care staff in South Wales taking part in trial.

Mr Drakeford said the vaccine is one of the “main candidate vaccines” for coronavirus.

Other research includes eight urgent trials investigating potential new treatments in Wales and more than 1,500 people from Wales taking part in research.

He said this research is “vital” in tackling the outbreak.

He said that he has always been “hugely impressed” by willingness of Welsh patients to take part in clinical trials.

Over this weekend, they will be contacting people who have tested positive for coronavirus as part of contact tracing trials, including in North Wales.

It is a key part of their strategy, he said.

They now have “significant” step closer to antibody testing being available in Wales. Care and health settings will be prioritised.

He said these are all very positive developments, and said they offer hope of new treatments, and future free of coronavirus.

Today, he said people should continue to “play their part” and follow stay at home rules.
