In ominous news for Hong Kong, which has recently witnessed severe pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong in 2019, China is ready to announce new national security legislation for the island nation.
"In light of the new circumstances and need, the National People`s Congress (NPC) is exercising its constitutional power" to establish a new legal framework and enforcement mechanism to safeguard national security in Hong Kong," Zhang Yesui spokesman for the China`s National People`s Congress was quoted as saying.
The new legislation will reportedly abolish many freedoms that the island nation has, and give more control to China.
Commenting on China’s initiative to introduce new security legislation, Trump said, "Nobody knows yet. If it happens we`ll address that issue very strongly."
Notably, Trump approved the "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act" in 2019 which ensured that the island nation retains enough autonomy to be on trading terms with the United States.
It is to be noted that pro-democracy protests went on for months last year after the Hong Kong government introduced a contentious bill called Fugitive Offenders amendment bill which would have allowed the extradition of wanted criminal suspects and criminal fugitives to mainland China thereby subjecting Hong Kong citizens to the judicial system and legal system of China if enacted. The Hong Kong citizens saw it as an attack on its autonomy, and a gross violation of the `one country, two systems` policy.
The Hong Kong media reported that the new legislation would ban secession, foreign interference, terrorism, and all seditious activities aimed at toppling the central government.
"If this move takes place, `one country, two systems` will be officially erased," said Dennis Kwok, a legislator in Hong Kong parliament.
