'Looked like a plane was getting shot down': Burning object spotted in Victorian skies

A large piece of what is believed to be space junk entered and burned up in Victoria's skies this evening, prompting calls to emergency services over fears of a plane crash.

Tom Toose, a 31-year-old farmer from Smeaton near Creswick, said he and his girlfriend pulled over in Creswick not long after 6pm to watch the "massive burning trail of embers" in the sky.

"I’ve never seen anything like that before in my life," he said. "It looked like a plane was getting shot down, it was massive."

Mr Toose said the object burned in the sky for at least 30 seconds, and he managed to film a few seconds on his phone before it burned out completely.

Burning object spotted over Creswick on Friday night.

"It was just the most surreal thing, I just thought a plane was getting shot down".

Calls were made to Ambulance Victoria at about 6.15pm from Creswick and Rushworth reporting fears that an aircraft may have been in difficulty.

The Country Fire Authority also were called to Melbourne Road in Creswick and Lockwood.

Mr Toose said he had friends in other parts of the state - one in Minyip in the Wimmera region and another friend in Echuca, who had also seen the extraordinary sight.

More to come.
