After the video of a young woman being beaten up by a woman police officer at a police station in Odisha went viral, the Odisha Human Rights Commission has instructed the youth to deduct Rs 10,000 from the salary of the police officer as interim compensation. Apart from this, the commission has also asked the district superintendent of police to submit a detailed report in this matter in four weeks.
On 25 March, Inspector Sandhyarani Jena of Patna police station in Keonjhar district beat Raju Mahanta, a young man from Talasarua village, and kicked him. Mahanta had a land dispute with his uncle and on 25 March lodged a complaint in this regard with the Patna police station. The female inspector then called her to the police station, where she assaulted her.
Video of the incident went viral on social media, following which Keonjhar SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra directed the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Ghatgaon to investigate the case. He also tweeted saying that assault during the custody would not be tolerated.
At the same time, the Odisha Human Rights Commission on physical torture by a police officer inside a police station in Keonjhar district said that the DGP, which controls the 70,000 strong police force in Odisha, should not allow the incident to happen again.
