Hyundai Creta vs Kia Seltos vs Nissan Kicks: Who pips the turbo battle

NEW DELHI: A vehicle's lifespan goes through midlife upgrades, full redesigns, improved in-car technology, engine overhauls. All these and more, just for a reason: Exude a feeling of freshness even after years in the market.
SUV is becoming a popular body type in India. Off late, Seltos's popularity must have overwhelmed the Kia Motors as well. However, every SUV that has appeared in the retail space in the last decade has wished to outdo the Hyundai Creta. In its second-gen avatar, Creta packs a formidable punch in terms of features, and packaging.
Nissan tried to capture the attention with Kicks. An SUV with immense potential, somehow, failed to get off the marks exuberantly. Nissan, in 2020, has stepped up to introduce a revitalized, more powerful Kicks.
Seltos, Creta and Kicks are similar in body type and pricing. All three SUVs are powered by an optional turbo-petrol engine. As a trend, more and more carmakers are choosing the turbo engines to lure the customers into a performance-packed riding environment. Here's how these turbo options of three SUVs face-off on the spec sheet:
Performance:
The facelift Creta gets a 1.4-litre, Kappa Turbo GDi, petrol engine mated to a 7-Speed DCT gearbox. The engine produces 140 PS of power and 242 Nm of peak torque.
Kia Seltos also has an identical 1.4-litre, Turbo GDi engine good enough for 140 PS and 242 Nm. That said, Seltos allowed you both manual and automatic gearboxes - 6-speed MT or 7-speed DCT.
Nissan Kicks packs the most powerful engine of the lot. The 1.3-litre, turbo-petrol engine belts out 156 PS of max power with 254Nm peak torque with the option of manual and X-Tronic CVT transmission.
Price:
With little differentiates the three in terms of performance, the price points may help you decide.
The turbo variant of Seltos (GTK) with 6-speed manual transmission starts at Rs 13.79 lakh (ex-showroom) while the 7-speed DCT (GXT) is priced at Rs 15.29 lakh (ex-showroom). The top-of-the-line GTX+ is priced at Rs 16.29 lakh (ex-showroom).
The range-topping Turbo trim of Hyundai Creta (SX Turbo) is priced at Rs 16.16 lakh (ex-showroom).
Nissan is offering Kicks is available in six turbo trims. The entry-level manual turbo starts at Rs 11.85 lakh (ex-showroom) while the premium-most trim is priced at Rs 13.90 lakh (ex-showroom). The CVT Turbo available in two trims, are priced at Rs 13.45 lakh and Rs 14.15 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively.
The competitive pricing and engine options on paper doesn't making a compelling case for Nissan Kicks. Surely, it's rolled out more attractively, but likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos will keep pushing above their weight.
