Odisha reports 74 Covid-19 cases, tally reaches 1,052

BHUBANESWAR: With 74 new Covid-19 positive cases reported in Odisha in the last 24 hours the total number of people who tested positive for the virus crossed 1,000 mark on Wednesday. The state has now recorded a total 1,052 Covid-19 positive cases with Malakangiri district reporting two maiden cases the number of affected districts reached 24. With the death of a 70-year-old Covid-19 patient in Khurda the death due to the virus rose to six in the state.
“A 70-year-old male of Khordha district, having history of comorbidity of hypertension, was admitted in AIIMS emergency on Tuesday with respiratory distress and died. He has tested positive for Covid-19,” informed health and family welfare department.
Apart from the two new cases detected in Malkangiri, the highest number of 28 cases reported from Boudh followed by 11 from Puri, nine in Cuttack, seven from Khurda, six each in Ganjam and Jajpur, two from Kendrapada and one each in Balasore, Dhenkanal and Kandhamal districts. With this the total number of active cases in the state remained 739.
Of the total 74 cases, 72 have returned from other states like West Bengal, Telenagana, Andhra Pradesh, Karntaka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala and were in different quarantine centres. The two local infected persons are one each from Khurda and Ganjam district.
Ganjam district has reported the highest number of 313 cases of whom 109 have recovered with 202 active cases. Jajapur and Balasore followed Ganjam with 174 and 122 positive cases respectively.
The number of Covid-19 cases made a sudden jump after the return of migrants to the state. A month ago on April 20, Odisha had reported 79 positive cases while on May 5 the number of total cases in the state was 177 and on May 20 (Wednesday) the number has increased to 1052.
As many as 1.9 lakh migrant Odias have returned to the state by trains and buses by Tuesday while 15,773 Odias have returned the state on Tuesday, official sources said.
Odisha conducted record number of 5,612 Covid-19 tests in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative samples tested so far to around 1.05 lakh.
