Super cyclone Amphan live updates: Kolkata airport suspends all operations including special, cargo flights

The cyclone has brought strong winds and heavy rains to the coastal areas with the winds reaching to as much as 106 kmph in Paradip.

Cyclone 'Amphan' has intensified into a super cyclonic storm and has moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 14 kmph during the past six hours. It now lay centred over the west-central Bay of Bengal and is very likely to cross West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans on Wednesday evening.

As per India Meteorological Department's (IMD) hourly bulletin, the super cyclone is nearly 125 km south-southeast of Paradip, 240 km south of Digha and 395 km southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh.

The cyclone has brought strong winds and heavy rains to the coastal areas with the winds reaching to as much as 106 kmph in Paradip.

The wind speed near its centre is said to be 170-180 kmph gusting to as much as 200 kmph.

Odisha government on Tuesday started evacuating 11 lakh people from coastal areas in view of the warning of strong winds and heavy rains due to Cyclone 'Amphan'. The government authorities are transporting the evacuees to temporary shelter homes.

The West Bengal government also started evacuating people from low-lying areas to safer places.

Amphan is now being continuously tracked by the Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh).
