Kamlesh Patel living in the machaan in Ambharam Para in Savarkundla taluka of Amreli districtAMRELI: Up in the air sans any human interference, Kamlesh Patel has been exploring his spiritual self these days, indulging in a 'me only' time surrounded by scriptures and books of wisdom. Patel, who took social distancing to greater heights, made a machaan (a raised platform 15 feet the ground) under the shade of a big tree on the outskirts of his village Ambharam Para in Savarkundla taluka of Amreli district. "I had been toying with the idea of a machaan for long. The imposition of the nationwide lockdown only gave me an added impetus to turn it into a reality," said Patel, who has been living in his new address for the past 18 days.
Free from the fear of being infected with the contagion, Patel is not only in peace with himself but with law, too. He has not come welcomed anybody to his new 'exalted' status, nor feels the urge to mingle. Therefore, what he set for himself is a textbook example of isolation through complete social distancing.
"I retire with the setting sun and wake up with its rising. One of my farm labourers brings me meals, breakfast and tea from time to time, while I am devouring the essence of epics including RamayanA, Mahabharata, Gita and also tales from the ancient texts of Upanishads. I am not virtually cut off from the world as I keep myself updated with news across the world on my cellphone," Patel added.
And he's not the only one. Taking a cue from Patel's lofty ideals, Rasool Rathod of Gajari village and Bashir Zakhara of Charkharia village of Savarkundla taluka too have taken themselves high above the ground. "This is the best way to maintain social distancing and fight spread of Covid-19," said Rathod, who, however, added that he climbs down only to offer namaz on the ground. And so does Zakhara. "Staying atop the machaan, you won't have to interact with anyone. Hence, you have peace of mind and also kill the fear of being either infected or transmitting it to anybody!"
