NEW DELHI: Compared to severely-affected countries of the world, India which enforced one of the strictest lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus, saw its tally of cases taking longer to reach the 100,000 mark signifying a slow growth rate of infections.
The number of
coronavirus cases in India took 64 days to reach from 100 to 100,000, according to data compiled by the ministry of family health and welfare and Worldometer. The death toll due to Covid-19 rose to 3,163 and the number of cases climbed to 1,01,139 in India on Tuesday.
When compared to several severely-affected countries these figures show that India has been relatively successful in stalling the rapid growth of virus which has claimed over 318,481 lives around the world.
While in the United States, the country with the highest number of infections in the world, took 25 days to report 100 to 100,000 cases. The US with 14,09,452 instances of the infection so far, has around 431 cases per
lakh population.
Italy, which reported highest Covid-19 deaths in Europe, took 36 days to report one lakh cases which has a total of 2,24,760 cases and about 372 cases per
lakh population.
United Kingdom crossed the one lakh mark from 100 in 42 days. The country has so far reported 2,40,165 cases which is 361 cases per
lakh population.
France which has reported 1,40,008 cases and has around 209 cases per
lakh population, reported a lakh cases in 39 days.
While Germany, which has registered 1,74,355 instances of the infection, has around 210 cases per
lakh population, crossed the one lakh mark in 35 days.
Spain reported one lakh cases in 30 days. The European nation has been the second-most severely hit nation in Europe after Italy and recorded 2,30,698 Covid-19 infections which is 494 cases per
lakh population.As per WHO data, 45,25,497 Covid-19 cases have been reported worldwide till Monday which is about 60 cases per lakh population.
