MUMBAI: The BMC has decided to turn a 5,000-sqm (1.24-acre) open plot opposite Mahim Nature Park into a 200-bed dedicated Covid care centre for Dharavi.
The MMRDA-owned plot is being taken over as coronavirus cases in Dharavi are increasing on a daily basis and quarantine facilities are getting full. "In this space, we want to make beds with oxygen supply available for patients," said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner, G North ward, which contains Dharavi. So far, 3.6 lakh people living in various pockets of the 2.5 sqkm slum have been screened. Officially, Dharavi has a population of 6.53 lakh, but the current estimate is more accurately 8.5 lakh.
BMC's Covid combatting facilities for Dharavi include a 300-bed quarantine space at Rajiv Gandhi District Sports Complex, a 700-bed isolation facility at the Dharavi transit camp school, 130 rooms in 11 lodges, and a few private hospitals, including Sai Hospital and Life Care Hospital, which have been acquired by the civic body as per epidemic disease law. On Monday, Dharavi reported 85 new Covid-19 cases, taking the slum's total to 1,327, which includes 56 deaths. Most of the new cases are from areas like Matunga Labour Camp, Kuumbharwada, the trasit camp, Dharavi main road and Shahu Nagar. In the same ward, Mahim reported 28 new cases (total 221 cases) and Dadar 14 (173).
